Arthritis - Can it be Prevented?
Sample of medical article writingWritten by Karen Cole-Peralta
This article is partly about how rheumatoid arthritis affects people’s lives. It bends them, it twists them and shapes their bodies into articulations of hideous pain. It’s now on the news, and it’s more serious than hell on Earth.
Overview of Arthritis
Effective help is currently available for people to proactively manage arthritis and enjoy life to the fullest. But the actual prevention of arthritis itself is yet another story.
With rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the membranes or tissues lining the joints become inflamed. There is no known way to prevent any form of this disease, including osteoarthritis, adult-onset arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The exact causes of all these conditions are unknown.
It's very important for people who fear they are at risk of rheumatoid arthritis to realize that at this time there are no medications to take or lifestyle modifications to make that can completely prevent this crippling disease. However, by making changes to your weight and diet and engaging in moderate exercise, you may be able to slow or even halt the disease's onset and progress.
But you can only really take the measures needed to control arthritis after it is diagnosed. Until it is known for sure if certain bacteria or viruses trigger the disease, contact with people suffering from it will not change your risk of developing it.
Traditionally, medications and physical therapy have been used to manage the disease. A massive amount of nutrient research has also shown the effect diet and supplements have on the body's healing processes. Lifestyle changes can also make a big difference.
Causes of the Disease
Joint injuries caused by accidents or overuse increase the occurrence of some types of arthritis. You can also inherit certain genes that may increase your risk. More research is needed to find out how to reduce the disease's onset from these factors.
Some individuals have an inborn tendency to degenerative joint disease because they have changes in the structure of the important protein-building blocks of the articular cartilage which covers the surface of their joints. These seemingly small but significant abnormalities predispose their joints to wear and degeneration. In other cases, joint injuries may contribute to the development of DJD.
No foods have been definitively shown to cause or exacerbate arthritis in most individuals. A variety of diets and "hand-me-down" information exists about certain foods and arthritis, in particular the night shade plants, but none of it has been proven.
There is a rare form of arthritis called Spure which is caused by allergies to wheat products. Avoiding those will eliminate this disease. Associated features include weight loss, diarrhea and osteoporosis. Consult your health care provider if this is a concern.
There are things you can do to reduce your risk for getting certain types of arthritis or to reduce disability if you already have arthritis.
Overweight and obese people have a higher frequency of arthritis. Excess weight increases risk for developing osteoarthritis in the knees, and possibly in the hips and hands. Women are at special risk. In men, excess weight increases the risk for developing gout. It's important to maintain your recommended weight, especially as you get older.
Arthritis Prevention Programs
The Center for Disease Control has implemented programs in several states to reduce the onset and consequences of arthritis. The National Arthritis Action Plan: A Public Health Strategy delineates the actions necessary to better understand the arthritis burden in the USA and helps to fully apply known and effective interventions.
This document represents the combined efforts of nearly 90 organizations, such as the Arthritis Foundation, government agencies and many other groups and individuals with an interest in arthritis prevention and control.
The NAAP proposes a nationally coordinated effort for reducing the occurrence of arthritis and its accompanying disability by focusing on these three areas:
1. Surveillance, epidemiology and prevention research to strengthen the science base.
2. Communications and education to increase awareness and provide accurate information about arthritis.
3. Programs, policies, and systems promoting increased quality of life for people with arthritis and facilitating arthritis prevention measures.
The CDC continues to accumulate scientific knowledge on the benefits of physical activity. Because healthy eating reduces a person's risk of becoming overweight, good nutrition plays an important role in preventing knee osteoarthritis. In addition, moderate physical activity is essential for maintaining the health of joints.

Personal Colour > Residential Interiors
Written by Kristi Wood
Edited by Karen Cole-Peralta
Colour Affects knows colour. As a general colour design planning company, we are always working with the psychology of colour and how it affects our valued clients’ emotions, your often hectic daily lives and how you feel about colour in general.
We are one of the few companies anywhere that combines researched scientific principles with artistic vision to bring the most effective use of colour to a variety of applications. We base our work on both the cosmetic effect of a beautiful appearance and the profound psychological effect of colour on human response and behaviour.
An important part of our job is in complementing the work of interior designers and architects by designing residential colour schemes. We meet with all of a home’s residents to assess their different needs and to create the ideal palette for each room in their home. We feel that home is one of the most important of all your personal environments, and as such must reflect your eclectic tastes and emotional needs.
Ideally, your home should provide a sanctuary to which you can retreat, a place where you can enjoy being yourself and welcome your friends and loved ones. It should also be a solid base from which you can go out into the world and do whatever you need to achieve. It is very important that it reflects and supports the personalities of those living there. Although there might be many different people in one home, if they are living together, chances are they have a lot in common -- and the right colour palette in each room will ease tensions and support harmony.
Colours are seen in design as “warm” or “cool,” depending on their associations with colours in nature. Red, orange and yellow are the “warm” colours, where green, blue and purple are the “cool” ones. Warm colors usually seem closer to the viewer than cool colors. Vivid cool colors can overwhelm both light and subtle warm colors. Using warm colors for foreground and cool colors for background enhances the perception of depth, and we can use this when selecting appropriate colours for your home.
The warm colours are considered “high arousal” and the cool ones “low arousal,” while the brilliance, darkness and lightness of a colour may alter the psychological message associated with it. While light blue-green appears to be tranquil and calms the senses, a brilliant turquoise will be much more exciting to the eye. This shows that the psychological association of a colour is often more meaningful than the visual experience of enjoying or perceiving the colour itself.
Colours have a tremendous impact upon the body, the mind and the soul. Red has been proven to stimulate the senses, while blue has the opposite effect and calms the mind. Pale green is often used in hospital settings due to its overall soothing effect, while bright yellow tends to crowd people’s thinking and overwhelm them. You can see how these different colours serve to entice your senses and stimulate certain emotional responses. That is why you need to carefully select the colour palettes of both the walls and the furniture of each room of your home, with which Colour Affects can ably assist you.
Mignone Interiors, our fellow colour design company, has a paint consultant service where they charge only 350 pounds to choose appropriate colours for each and every room in your entire home. They would be more than delighted to create the perfect colour schemes for you -- as your busy, hectic modern life requires.

A Tale of Pangaea --Thais
Excerpt from Chapter One
By Christopher Brown
Rewritten by Karen Cole-Peralta
The morning sun arose in a flash of majestic splendor and the twilight which veiled the forest of Genjin Wer succumbed to a flourish of auburn luster. The shadows of the ancient trees began to seep and stretch in a joyful yawn. Mist gently tumbled in and around the delicate hills of the forest, dancing openly and shrouding the wood in a glow of serenity. The mist separated as a doe contributed to a leisure path over a gentle hill. The frigid air was long gone and the snows long melted, and the spring wrought forth a plentiful bounty of food. The doe grazed casually beneath the canopy, her ears twitching in tune to the birds who sung above her meal. The shadows began to lose their height, but amongst the captive silhouettes an insurgent struggled free. Then two more followed.
“Don’t move, Capron,” said Thais.
Capron stammered. He was very good at that.
“And don’t talk!” cut in Roland.
Roland and Capron were brothers. They were both very tall and had dark hair and eyes; their complexions were similar, but as with all brothers, they were complete opposites. Roland, the oldest by two years, loved to hunt. He was proficient with the bow, sword and various other weapons, and loved to fight. Capron disliked the bow and sword, yet he did have some skill with both. He preferred to hunt using traps, perhaps because he was kind-hearted; he was usually cool-headed, but often fought with his older brother.
Capron could almost always be seen wearing his pack of ropes, nets and metal clasps. It jingled like a bag of bells wherever he walked, and proved a severe nuisance when the three men hunted together. Roland and Capron were the only living siblings of their clan, who several years ago had been killed in a savage assault. Although at first appearance they appeared to dislike each other, it was evident they each admired the other's skills.
Roland rubbed his face just beneath his left eye, to scratch an old scar that was given to him by frostbite in childhood. It was shaped like a tear, and brought to life all the pain the two young men had suffered. That was the same fateful year that the brothers lost their family.
“Capron, you can’t just walk up to your prey and ask it to kindly step into your trap.” He stared coldly into his brother’s eyes. “Take my bow. It’s time you killed like a man.” Hesitantly, Capron picked the bow from his brother’s hand, his eyes moving to the doe. He slid an arrow into the notch, and started to draw. Watching with interest and amused by his friend’s anxiety, Thais slowly stepped behind a tree located to Capron’s left.
Thais was the shortest of the three, though he was stockier and leaner. He also had dark hair and eyes, but his hair was cropped down neatly to his skull. He came from the west of Genjin Wer, born of what used to be the Taeja Clan, named for that part of the massive valley. He was the son of his village’s chief. Like Roland and Capron, when he was a child, his home was ransacked and its inhabitants were slaughtered, and the children were taken prisoner by the fierce Freemen. They were a group of bandits who attacked in the early hours of the night. They operated using stealth assaults, and were very quick to kill.
They also ransacked the Tala clan, named for the north, and once the home of his two best friends. However, weeks later, while preparing to assault the Ezra village, a Freeman scouting party was spotted by a wandering child playing in a tree. The young boy ran home to tell his father, and he in turn went to the village elders. Two of the village’s best scouts were sent into the woods after the spies. They captured them swiftly, and brought them to the Chief of the Ezra. After several hours alone with the chief, they confessed about when they intended to attack.
When the assault began, they were surprised by the Ezras and lost the battle. The villagers adopted the children, and taught them the ways of their clan. Virgil, the Ezra’s Chief, took Thais under his wing. He was raised to master the Canto Magus, and after many years, he’d become quite a proficient understudy, but he had a hard time applying the skills he'd learned. He struggled with his lack of magical prowess for a long time, and was utterly depressed by his lack of control, for he knew eventually it would be up to him to lead the Ezra Clan. A daunting task, for the respect that Virgil received was beyond bounds.
He took his place behind a strong tree, and watched as Capron drew the bow silently. Roland looked at Thais with mirth, and moved to take cover himself when he noticed that his brother's eyes were closed.
“What do you think you're doing, Capron? How do you expect to bring him down with your eyes closed?”
“I don’t need to see him die, I’ll make the shot, but you two have to do the rest, okay?” Roland put his hand on his brother’s arm and asked for the bow. Without hesitation, Capron returned the bow to his more experienced brother. Instantly, Capron began to relax.
“Maybe it would be better if you did it. I…I just can’t.” Roland turned to Thais and threw down the bow, and then the quiver. Thais caught them nimbly. He immediately notched an arrow and silently drew the bow, taking aim at the grazing doe.
“Wait.” Thais turned his head to see to what Roland wanted. He was looking at his brother and said the following line, without a hint of compassion.
“If you don’t watch with your eyes, I’ll pull both of them out, and feed them to the doe.” Capron knew it was an exaggeration. Nevertheless, he was startled by his brother’s words.
“You know, I can’t. I’m no hunter, I never even liked the training we had learning to use these dreadful weapons. Don’t look at me like that, I mean, I know we have to eat, but I have my own methods and they work.”

Autumn Leaves Never Die
Poem by Karen Cole-Peralta
Won an award at Poetry.com
Dancing, prancing, floating leaves excite my sight
Cascading down in wet sheets like chunky rain.
Some fall singly, each one a summer's death knell.
How is this, year after year, they die as they appear?
As at my feet they fall, I pick up one up to study it,
Searching for the secret of its splendorous attraction.
Why is a dead plant part lovely, and so obvious?
Who was its beauty meant to attract and why?
Even though eventually brown, and crunched underfoot
So like the oncoming snow, sticking to my rubber boots
The same way, each one is a microcosmic pageant's
Reflection why in the world do they show off this way?
Russet, orange, yellow as the sun, neither blue nor pink,
They twirl about in midair defiant of their yearly demise.
I envy their colors, dreaming of a death like this for me.
What if I myself radiated the patterns of a dying leaf?
I'd spin around in sophisticated lazy circles as I expired,
Hurling my body gently to the ground in so many colors
And styles that God would have to keep me on Earth,
'Til I crisped brown enough on my edges to finally leave.

(Today’s Date)
Dear (Literary Agent or Publisher),
Don’t you find it amazing how women will spend thousands of dollars to improve their lives? Plastic surgery, diets that don’t work, exercise machinery, therapy--it seems that women are willing to spend whatever it takes to improve their looks and feel a greater sense of control over their lives. What these women don’t realize is that with a few simple, extremely inexpensive and carefully applied holistic steps, an improved lifestyle can be achieved both naturally and quickly. You don’t need to spend the money. What you need to spend is the time.
My book, Forever Young & Beautiful: A Woman’s Health and Wellness Guide for the Body, Mind, & Spirit, is almost guaranteed to bring about such positive and natural lifestyle changes. I am a professional motivational speaker, group counselor, and author of several published articles on health, beauty, and nutrition. I have also been a licensed beautician and cosmetologist who owned and operated several beauty salons. I have long been a natural, holistically-oriented beauty expert, and am aware of many industry secrets. And along with many medical experts and nutritionists, I am totally convinced that healthy dietary changes and better lifestyle choices have a lot to do with the quality and longevity of women’s lives. In Forever Young & Beautiful, I share the many holistic secrets I have found over the years that aid women in feeling wonderful, looking younger, and living longer--naturally. This book covers a wide and extensive range of topics, ranging from well-balanced nutrition and the postponement of aging to successful parenting and almost everything you need to know about the early child care years. Techniques for achieving outer beauty and inner peace as well as a holistic segment on spiritual health are also included. Forever Young & Beautiful is sure to teach readers everything they need to know about staying young, healthy, and more than exuberantly delighted with their lives!
Forever Young & Beautiful includes information on:
· Eating well through choosing the right foods
· The role of antioxidant vitamins and minerals in healing and extending women’s lives
· Weight control through a balanced diet

· Inner & outer beauty--natural skin care and make-up
· Spiritual health--Aromatherapy--Meditation--Yoga--The power of prayer
· Parenting--proper step-by-step nutrition for mother and baby
· Healthy, natural holistic recipes--and much more!
Forever Young & Beautiful has been gradually compiled from both my own personal experience and my carefully exhaustive research of medical journals, books on natural health and nutrition, and my frequent studies at holistic health seminars. It is designed for the busy woman who doesn’t have a lot of time for lengthy, dull and overly complicated books. It is straightforward, succinct while covering a lot of ground, and contains nothing but up-to-the-moment information. It is life-changing, and may even save some women’s lives!
Forever Young & Beautiful is approximately 250 double-spaced manuscript pages (50,000 words). I received a lot of positive feedback from the book’s general audience. It was first published in December 2001, and I am now looking to publish a completely revised version, one which will reach a much broader mass-market audience.
I am a motivational writer and researcher with a passion for self-help, natural health, nutrition and spirituality-based literature. My second book, tentatively titled Destined Love: A Practical Guide to Attracting Your Soul Mate, will be completed in 2004. If you help to publish Forever Young & Beautiful, I will certainly publish that second book through you. Due to my many years of experience in this field, I am sure both books will sell extremely well, and will return an ample profit for your company.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you. I’ve enclosed a biographical note, a comparative market assessment, and an SASE for your reply. Return of any of the materials is not necessary.
With the Warmest Regards,

Letter of Query
Attn: Literary Agent
Sarlakk manuscript
Dear Literary Agent,
I am sending you a wonderful, moody, multiple genre work called Sarlakk, for your perusal and enjoyment. It has been previously published, by Xlibris Press. I retain all rights to the work. It beautifully encompasses the genres of Adult Fiction, Science Fiction, Dark Fantasy, Gay Fiction, and to a certain extent, Horror and Satanic Literature. If you need a category suggestion, it mostly entails Dark Fantasy/Science Fiction.
The work is soundly individualistic, while also being aimed at the modern, club-oriented youthful crowd of the “Hundreds” (the 2000s decade), with deeply male and female overtones of extreme competition and humorous relaxation in the face of gruesome war, heated sex, and rank deprivation.
The characterizations are intense and seamy, sophisticated, yet starkly and whitely outlined, with each character shining forth as a piece in an elaborate puzzle. The whole work is carefully calculated to keep the readers guessing, and is already leading them into my further works. I’m sure the first book will sell even further with your publishing house, and will draw more readers in, as I leave tantalizing clues to further embrace the reader’s darkest and most secret fantasies, while also blending this heated structuring into lighter tones of goodness beyond death, and deepest possible trust between bitterly embattled enemies.
I am certain you will find the sample chapters to be a terrific and timely read, very oriented to these modern and almost weirdly alienated times. Please contact me right away after you have made your decision. I believe you will be publishing my series of novels, as you will find yourself easily drawn into my eerie and rose-colored web of spontaneous intrigue. And please help yourselves to enjoy Sarlakk the book, the eternal battle and cooperation between the darkness and the light, the weapon and the mystery, and the ruby-scarlet color of the poisonous rose…
Sincerely Yours,
Claudia San Luis

VINCENT "VINNIE" DECAMPO
Brief Biography
Vincent G. DeCampo was born in Yonkers, New York. At age eight, his family moved to Washington D.C. After WWII and his mother’s death, the family moved to Maryland, where he grew up, going to school and working there.
Vincent, an extremely passionate and strong-blooded Italian-American, first turned on to writing while attending the University of Maryland, where he worked as Manager of Campus Projects in the Engineering and Architecture Department. But a time-consuming job and the science of raising three talented children stalled his writing career, until his retirement fully commenced.
His first novel, Tales of Mellwood, an adventure-laden historical novel, was released in September 2003 by Publish America. He also had three short stories published by Infinity Press. They appear in an anthology, Peanut Butter and Jellyfish, which will be out in December 2003. He also belongs to the Ormond Writer’s League, a critiquing group of fifteen local published writers.
Vincent says he is much like the characters in his books: multi-faceted, tough-living and hardboiled, and possibly even a little mentally disturbed. Like Jared in Escape Into Hell he has sudden, mysterious attacks of morbid fear and heartfelt passion. But unlike Jared, Vincent is totally in control of himself, and does not own a ten-foot-long blacksnake. He doesn’t need one, for he knows no one can defeat him. Well-built both physically and mentally, he feels that no man can ever drive him down, or beat him up.
Vincent now lives in Ormond Beach, Florida, with his lovely and wonderful wife, and is finally doing what he likes best: writing mystery stories. He is currently churning out several hard-hitting mystery/horror novels, the first of which is Escape Into Hell; but he still has plenty of time for playing jazz, collecting old recordings and sport cards, doing volunteer work, and walking on the beach with his wife.

How a Head Cold Got Me Married
By Karen Cole-Peralta
Published by "Swinging Single's Life" of Seattle, WA
Now that I’m really settled down for bad or good, I can’t help but reflect on my lengthy past as a happy-go-lucky single. How can I forget the many bizarre, crazy, and benighted times I’ve misled myself into a man’s twin loving arms, and how very much I miss loving every minute of it? How?
Why, I squirm as if caught in a velvet trap…well, I could, but my husband is standing right behind me and might ask me what I’m sitting on.
Yes, it’s been nothing but high misadventure for me, especially since I lost my extremely brave and sincere first husband, a wonderful Austrian-American Jew, to combined MS and cancer on February 23, 1985.
I loved him so much…even after more than a dozen intensive, fascinating, and downright roller-coaster relationships before then, my first real commitment, he was still the only man I ever truly loved (Remigio, stop looking at this over my shoulder!)
Anyway, several eventful years and as many nerve-wracking, tumultuous, and sanity-defying relationships later, I landed in the plastic schoolroom seat in front of Remigio, my future second husband, in a five-week Certified Nurse Aide class held at a nursing home near Northgate in Seattle, next to a merrily perking and brewing coffee pot. Innocent and unknowing, I was headed for yet another high-pitched roller coaster ride.
All my relationships, especially as an adult, have been crazy ones. My first husband thought he lucked out marrying his sexy young attendant. In his early thirties, Gary was dying horribly, often in great pain, and I was forced to fall deeply in love with his stubborn courage and what was ebbing away of his once trim and athletic youthful body. He was the first person who truly needed, wanted, and loved me. His courage lasted completely, until the very end. Oh, how I have missed his loving, gentle arms.
After he died, I had several wild, bitter and tragically brief affairs. If I ever write about everything that happened, it would make three or four excellent trashy novels. Whatever, it was fun being single again, a vast relief from the hours of watching over Gary’s dying and emaciated form.
But Remigio stopped my new single life cold simply by kicking the frail back of my chair in CNA class—HARD! He received all my undivided attention, distracting me from talking to a fellow classmate, a middle-aged black lady. He caught me in the middle of accidentally sniffing at her. I apparently was coming down with a major head cold.
Really, I would like to think ‘twas because he preferred the pretty, teasingly mid-calf length crisp white skirt I was wearing for the first time in class to the pretty much bulkily pantaloned, overweight, and married other female denizens of our class. Well, Grace, the middle-aged black lady, was only sitting pat. A hard worker of several years standing, she was being “grandfathered in” as a CNA, but still had to take the class.
Remigio may have been trying to protect her from me, as I’d been sniffling at her for the last three or four sessions…such was vengeance from Karen the Terrible. SNIFF !!
Grace was sitting to the right front, I was seated to the rear left, and as I’d recently had an extremely weird experience involving three black men and a basketball, I was fitfully “taking it out” on Grace. I was casting her sidelong glances, and sniffing loudly, intermittently and guiltily considering fetching her a hot cup of coffee as the pot was brewing closer to me than her. It would have been hard for her to squeeze between the seats and fetch herself a hot, fresh cup. I began getting her some coffee.
Sometimes I added creamer. I even stirred it with the little red plastic stir sticks. She finally asked me to add a sugar packet, please.
She liked the coffee, but our distantly commiserative relationship as two ladies of nursing was rudely interrupted by the rapid-fire entrance of Remigio’s sneakered foot through the reverberating back of my nearly shattering cheap plastic chair. I’ve lovingly saved the black marks on the back of my white nursing jacket for years.
Turning around, right after the “kick-off,” I astonishingly faced a middle-aged, awfully hate-ridden, and flatly Hispanic cold stare. This angry face, however, reminded me of a similar nut-brown countenance, a Middle-Eastern teacher I’d been attracted to ‘way back at Ohio University in 1978. Said chap always mispronounced the word “equilibrium” in a characteristic accent that could shatter a glass retort. He explained the rules of physical science to us neophyte med students in as high of a pitch as he could muster, but it was musical and alluring somehow…and this kicky guy behind me looked a lot like him.
Remigio turned out to be a quite engaging and multi-talented Philippino/Hawaiian import, a seventh-degree black belt martial arts expert, a fabulous chef of all regional cuisines and one heck of a lip-locking rugged kisser, in approximately that order. I was an artist and writer of long standing who needed some work "on the side," so I'd decided to take a Certified Nursing training course and move in with a little old lady I knew who needed the help. It was a great free way to continue with my career without interference. But now this new guy had shown up in my life. What can you do when they come at you from behind like that? I tried out assuming there was something nice about him.
He gradually broke down in his enmity towards me, merrily chasing me to the bus stop in his beat-up old blue and white pickup truck. He soon followed me home, and Mommy said I could keep him. Actually, “Mommy” was that little old lady, Carrie, a disabled, fellow "freckly" dwarf (you could spot her) I was working for and living with at the time. She needed extensive in-home care, and Remigio went right to work helping us move into a larger apartment, even cooking and cleaning for us. I scarcely had to lift a finger; Remigio was simply everywhere, driving us to church and generally relieving me of my cares and woes until Carrie abruptly died, peacefully in her sleep. Well, possibly those Catholic nurses gave her a lethal injection. She may have been wandering around at night and screaming her lungs out. She had a very bad knee problem, and had kept me awake nights frequently with it. Again, what can you do?
We married a week and a day after Cinquo de Mayo, 1991. We’re still madly in love, and near Christmas day of 1994 we were blessed by a Pinay from Heaven, our little princess Angela, nut-brown as her Daddy and sporting my chipmunk cheekbones. Yes, Remigio is crazy about me now. We should be okay, as long as they don’t use the nets.
This incident may be the only time in history that a cold-stricken gal every attracted a lonely, jealously protective guy through being an apparently obvious, blatant and coffee-fetching sniffing presumed bigot. Bigots and non-bigots alike, take note.
I guess I’d suggest that more single white ladies, and any other intrigued parties, try sniffling (or sniffing) at nearby black people to see whose attention they furtively attract. Of course, you may inadvertently attract a black person, which might work out quite well for you, especially if they happen to be an excellent cook -- as the husband of a friend of mine (who used this method) turned out to be. Hope that he or she has a sense of humor. Or, believe in whatever powers that may be.
If so, it helps a lot if you fetch them some coffee. It soothes their tired, ruffled feathers. Seems some folks are more descendants of birds than lizards.
Be sure and add some cream and sugar.
THE DEATH DEFYING
WAREHOUSE PARTY LIFE
Interview by “W. of Orange” (Karen Cole-Peralta)
About an entire local music industry that’s rarely heard from, briefly navigated by a remote being that coalesces, rarely, around music scenes and their absurd atrocities; published by "The Stranger" weekly newspaper of Seattle, WA.
Sonny Chelf is the orneriest house party producer I know who hails from Tacoma. In fact, he’s the only such producer I know from Tacoma. Most of those kind of guys hang about the Seattle area, drifting back and forth in their musical skeins and ongoing search for monetary angles.
Jason Alley’s from Issaquah. They both operate forklifts in warehouses for their real livings. And I met them over coffee awhile ago at Starbucks on Broadway for a happy, peppy interview with two of the greater Seattle area’s own warehouse party producers.
Sonny, casual, relaxed and vivacious, wore “Portuguese” golden earrings; Jason, soft-spoken and shy, wore a diamond-blue ball cap over his sweet blue eyes and blond hair. Sonny is fair and Black, but doesn’t sound that way until you press him, and then a trickle of southern Blacklish begins to filter in, conversationally speaking.
How long have you been involved in the warehouse game, I suddenly asked.
Sonny: The first part of this took place in 1981. That was in Germany. Parties in Germany used more hype. Parties here seem to be more about money and competition.
Jason: I joined TUF Productions for the last party. I joined with another party than ours…some producers have a different agenda than others…(indicating Sonny, giggling.)
What is your agenda? I ask the cute black dude.
Sonny: First we sit there and have a headache. Nah, usually I like to find a space first. That’s kind of a last minute thing you have to do.
Jason: There’s been a lot of problems with the city. The city is pushing hard to shut the shows down.
Sonny: There was a battle over permits being in order.
Jason: The city would threaten to take the house over.
Sonny: Yeah.
Jason: The city would intimate that a party would be through. The owners of the building would refuse to rent to those who produced shows, for fear their properties would have police action taken against them.
These statements led to general murmurings amongst us.
So, whatever is your “agenda” now, I softly inquired.
Sonny: (About) the agenda? Line up the DJs!!! They come from everywhere, basically. When we produce a flyer, we try to promote it (the party) day in and day out. During that time, we finish producing the rest of the show. Lights, sound, security, permits, “etcetera.” And then it’s showtime! I like to get in a building at noon, but it never happens. Just to fine-tune the building! (He laughed, sliding slowly backwards in his seat.)
Jason: If we have decorations, some people put up fences. (I never found out what “fences” are.) It needs all completed. The sound system usually arrives in the middle of things.
We joked around about the house movement….”Yeah, the houses are moving!!!” as I’m not much of a raver m’self, yet. The joints do indeed jump.
What message to others, anyway, do you guys have to impart?
Jason: Positive energy.
Sonny: Peace, love, joining one another together. But after the party comes the teardown. I hate it, but it has to be done.
I asked Sonny if that’s his real name. Yes, it is. He was wearing a hunting cap, Polynesian earrings, and he vaguely resembled a certain letter of the alphabet due to his glasses.
Jason’s blue ball cap was fastidiously reversed. Two more either-bread and mayonnaise guys could not be found, but they were definitely having to skirt the law.
I finally found out what happened last spring, which had been the current House Party Mystery Scenario.
Sonny: A dividing of the whole scene here occurred. There were occurrences of two parties being thrown on the same night. Something had to stop. Seattle’s not that big. It’s not that good here, we need more party room. Evolution (back in October, and partially run by a close relative of mine named Joachim, incidentally) just had 1500 people. It was over 1500, really.
Jason: We had over 1200. But Seattle is not really a good indicator. In LA (what doesn’t begin, end, and stall out in LA?) they have BIG huge parties, with a couple hundred thousand people, easily.
A couple…what? I stupifiedly intoned, slurping my Starbucks. That couldn’t be real, I thought, they’d need a football stadium…which they have, somewhere.
I dreamed to myself, the party interview vortex has been reentered. I’ve been being told that everyone and no one ever interviews these warehouse party guys. Now I see why. No one ever believes them when they talk about the party sizes.
Sonny then said he begged in on things with Jason through a mutual friend of theirs named Tim. On Tim, Sonny said, “we’ve talked to Tim. How’re you?” This, referring to my earlier interview more on the Seattle end of things, with Joachim. Tim, there, is not a part of the company anymore. I guess that’s the party vortex for you.
Sonny next managed to imitate the world’s blandest, meekest expression, which was already on Jason’s wan, pink face.
Jason: All I have to say is we hope people keep supporting the shows.
Sonny: I’m the quiet person of all this. I like to come in like the wind and leave…like…the wind….
Jason: I like to be around the people. I like to be around the friends. (I always got the impression this is a tightly-knit, hard-to-enter crowd. But I asked them about making a living at it.)
Sonny: I like to be around this for the money. If I didn’t do this for the money, I wouldn’t do it.
It feels like I’ve learned, after several interviews with Seattle/Tacoma’s warehouse partying folks, that there’s no money in this, really. Off the last shows, they don’t seem to have made a dime.
PeaceFrog’s Civilization party in November barely broke even, in fact losing at least $200. One of the PeaceFrog producers told me only about half the people coming in even paid. I don’t think Joachim got his cut at all. But their group is still plugging away at making the lively, eventful, and appreciably loud parties continue to happen.
Sonny said, the way I feel…it might make the WRONG money…(I think he meant the probably drug revenues from hangers-on selling at the parties.) Me, I broke in with: But, what if you were, say, normal?
Jason: Good point.
Sonny: What if everybody else was like what’s on the street, already there. (Recall that Sonny’s Black, please.) You’re gonna get ‘em “thowed in jay-al.” I’ve done two (parties) in Tacoma (an infamously Black establishment, in some ways.) There’s a problem with that. Seattle people don’t travel. The Dome is too commercial. This isn’t…a commercial event...that I do.
Go to shows, Sonny said. I have a real job. I work, in a warehouse, driving forklifts. I’m a laborer. Saturday nights are my date. That’s the party date. (He pretty much implied this is his social life. I am forced to think both Sonny and Jason are house-devoted, maximally.)
After this pleasant, caring interview time was spent, one happy writer left those two fine, unrude, music-bestrewed dudes to hit their next appointment in town. The memory lingers, but the music is fortunately elsewhere, waiting for the next major warehouse debacle to begin. From the general sound of things, I would suggest checking out Los Angeles if you want to hit the biggest party scenes.

Karen Cole-PeraltaHow Bullet-Proof Domain Hosting Works
Usually, your web hosting provider will shut down your web site within days, or even sooner, if they find out you are sending bulk e-mails and directing people to your site on their server. Our innovative Bullet-Proof Domain Hosting gives you sure-fire protection from being shut down, and you will have total control over your e-mail campaign’s web site, anytime you want.
We will host your domain name and redirect all your traffic to any web address of your choice, using our special URL cloaking technique. Your domain name will always be displayed in the top URL address bar, so any web surfers won't see the actual “forwarded to” web address in their browsers. We will never shut you down, no matter how many complaints we receive! And you will always have the flexibility to change the redirecting URL address at any time through a password-protected web interface; you are in total control!
We use three techniques to hide your destination URL from the surfers. In addition to URL cloaking, we also employ a script that will disable the browser's status bar, so it won't show your URL when surfers move their mouse over a link in your web page. The third technique is that we insert faked and encrypted prefix string to your destination URL, to disguise your real web address and to confuse surfers. Our goal is to make all complaints come to us, not to your destination hosting provider, so that your e-mail campaign’s web site will last.
Our Bullet-Proof Domain Hosting service also enables you to eliminate expensive bulk web hosting fees, since you can set up your web site on several cheap or free web hosts and switch among them instantly if any one of them does get shut down.

Sample Business Letter
To: Miranda Heller, VP of Programming, HBO
Subject: Mutual Contact, Idea for HBO Original Series
From: The Desk of Rainbow Writing, Inc.
Dear Miranda,
We understand you are the Vice President of Programming at HBO. We received your name and e-mail address from an excellent script writer we both happen to know, one whose scripts are frequently produced by famous directors, such as Spike Lee and Franco Zeffirelli. We are Rainbow Writing, Inc., a well-known writing, editing and web development company. And we have a sexy, controversial and extremely modern hot new property to introduce to you, by a lady who shall soon be known worldwide.
Her name is Claudia San Luis, and she is the published author of "Sarlakk," a very controversial and seductive adult/science fiction/dark fantasy/religious-satanic novel, part of a series, which both nobly and colorfully displays the heartfelt interaction of Good versus Evil. Good finally comes out as the most positive force in the end. But Ms. San Luis lovingly and elaborately explains the dynamically necessary interaction of all the dark and light forces, through a well-drawn web of intriguing characterizations and engagingly interwoven plot elements.
She has many interrelated themes in her series of novels, all with similar and continuing concepts and characters. We can send you an excerpt of her enticingly romantic, darkly fascinating prose, which encompasses heated sex, detailed and dark-hued political maneuverings, and much freely feminine symbolism, including gay and bisexual references and "the immortal poison of the succulently scarlet rose!" Simply request it from us, and we will send it on to you, if you are interested.
Although the novels are both sensuously and sexually graphic, they can be readily adapted to fit HBO's requirements and formats. The sexual sequences can be toned down and implied rather than actually presented very easily. And Ms. San Luis, along with RWI and the aforementioned script writer, are willing to work closely with you and HBO to make all the perceived necessary changes to any of the structures, scenes and characteristics of her work needed by the programming agencies.
I am also writing to Carolyn Strauss, the head of HBO's "Original Series" program, with a similar letter, outlining the exceptional qualities of Ms. San Luis' series of books. Please reply back as soon as possible regarding an overall review of her writing talents. After you have made your decision, which should most definitively be in the positive, we will begin the process of formalizing a contract, and producing the treatment and a full script of the first book in this new and seductively controversial adult-oriented series, "Sarlakk."
With the Warmest Regards,
