Global Issues - Current and Outstanding Celebrations, Issues and Problems

Deepak Sarkar, www.kolki.com

(From the Author of “Poems by Kolki – Absolutely Humane”, a recipe for better world)

We can celebrate Earth Day, UN Day, Youth Day, Children’s Day, Peace Day, etc., year after year! But without resolving core issues causing the very sufferings, abuses, wars, pollutions, hunger, and discriminations on Planet Earth - the celebrations end like any other such yearly ritual.

Here is a short list of global issues, current and outstanding - some lasting a very long time:

1.     Open public investigation for 9/11 US Domestic disaster which gave USA, NATO, Israel power to take unilateral military actions against any nation and individual bypassing Rule-of-Law and Proof-of-Convictions as well as ignoring United Nations and International Court of Justice

2.     Ending illegal Iraqi Occupation by most brutal and abusive US-led so called allied military forces that killed 800,000+ civilians, wounded millions, and displaced 5+ millions in civilized 21st Century. Democracy in Iraq can never work while it is occupied and the puppet government is under the supreme military-mercenary gun

3.     War Crimes in Iraq – invasion of peaceful Iraq was illegal as certified by Kofi Anan and Hans Blix based on UN and International Charter! But the war criminals of Bush-Blair-Howard administrations and respective military are still free endangering the world communities and societies

4.     US-British-Israeli Private Mercenaries - UN must sanction US-Britain-Israel for using private mercenaries in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine with absolute immunity from sovereign laws. Use of private mercenaries in war or as security forces must be totally banned in a civilized world.

5.     US/NATO forces must stop all pre-emptive air strikes in Afghanistan and they must be judged under war crimes for all killings of Afghan citizens and destruction just out of mere speculations. We must ask who gave US/NATO forces license to extra-judicial killings resembling Israel’s path of lawlessness.

6.     Unknown Detainees must be brought to open public justice system so that world can see them, hear them, and judge them once for all to identify true nature and power of Al-Qaeda

7.     900,000 Secret US Federal Employees – Fellow Americans must stand tall for transparency of Democratic Government identifying all secret federal employees trained by CIA/FBI and what they have doing around the world since 9/11!

8.     Anthrax Perpetrators – UN must help fellow Americans investigate who sent US military grade Anthrax to Democratic Senators, Media critical to Bush Administration. This is important to stop future biological terrorism around the world.

9.     Kyoto – All countries must sign and ratify this protocol as a sign of international solidarity against global warming addressing the issue with urgency bypassing politics (US and its worldwide military operation produce 25% of the green house gases, worst polluter, must be the first to sign and obey the protocol as a leader)

10.  Democratizing Constitutional Monarchs – as world embraces democracy and democratic values it is time to have true democracies in most NATO countries including United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Japan. Use of military must be a political decision of sovereign countries where non-elected Constitutional Monarchs must not be the Commander in Chief. So, it is time to end all Constitutional Monarchies to secure and sustain worldwide true democracy.

11. Dissolving NATO – West needs a western Gorbachev to dismantle Aggressive/Abusive NATO military alliance voluntarily. Peace can never be achieved when a military alliance attacks and sanctions countries bypassing UN authority justifying Humanitarian Hypocrisy. Thus NATO expansion is United Nation’s destruction.

12. Freeing Korea, Japan and Germany from US occupation – large US military presence in those countries for half a century works against democracy and national unity. It is time - Korea, Japan and Germany enjoy freedom void of US military occupation.

13. Air India Disaster of 1985 Open Public investigation (long outstanding): Since Canadian Government, Justice System and Media failed to launch an open public investigation into one of the worst terrorist act in airline history masterminded and perpetrated from Canada, UN must help Canadians towards full open public investigation serving long outstanding justice to the real perpetrators including CSIS and RCMP officials for destruction of all important audio tapes and many physical evidences related to the disaster.

14.  Last in this list but not least Democratizing UN Security Council reflecting world population and voice to minimise abusive sanctions and convenient wars of supremacy.

When the wise fail to act, the ignorant world becomes a dangerous place. We must stand tall as world citizens despite all business to ensure these issues get resolved for the benefit of mankind and other sentient beings, leading to lasting peace, prosperity, and enormous cultural evolutions on Planet Earth

NEOCONS in the United States of America had fantasy!

To rule the world in peace time with hostile vision of Supremacy!

Where, as minority, they govern US and the world with secrecy;

Maintaining parallel military Government hijacking democracy;

Dismantling all peace initiatives, poisoning global intimacy!

Financing NGOs as crusaders for the International Republican Party!

Asked then President Clinton to sign and implement it!

They trapped his vulnerability using Jewish American Monica Lewinsky!

Marred 2000 election with deceptions and fraudulent activities!

Patronized cunning George Bush for presidential candidacy!

Encouraged Supreme Court for undemocratic Republican victory!

With firm grip on NSA, CIA, FBI, NASA, FED and Military –

They fooled Clinton Administration with false Al-Qaeda activities!

(Must we wonder why UN and NATO can never sanction against Western and Israeli aggression? As occupiers executed Saddam Hussein for hearsay domestic killings, allied Invaders are still free after destroying Iraq inflicting 655,000+ well documented killings! How just is our justice? Kolki)

Judges punish citizens

For felony, battering and crimes!

Lawyers build cases for the jurors

Proving innocence or guilty as charged!

To stop imperialism by super power!

Creating United Nations, International Court

With votes, veto and legal power!

But super power can buy votes!

Bribes lawyers or apply own veto for war!

Dividing nations creating allied power

Attack and occupy country at peace

Exercising brutal military power!

Killing, terrifying, abusing civilians

Destroying culture ancient and dear!

International court remains helpless and silent!

As war crime tribunals punish victims of violence!

While criminals of wars celebrate victory

Making world more fragile, divided and angry!

(No soldier must go beyond border unless in peace mission or rescuing world citizens from natural calamities! Kolki)

Though we come in the world as citizens -

Boundary beyond our control makes us limited!

Assigning a country with a border well guarded -

Making us patriot to protect land inherited!

Soon we learn about Fatherland or Motherland!

Heroes who fought in many heroic stands!

Died like patriots guarding skies and barriers -

Often for freedom, sometimes for invasions as intruders!

We become adult inspired by ‘Us’ versus ‘Them’!

From sports to jobs to economy to military race!

Competition grows to beat neighbouring state -

Who can build the military to fight for Supremacy the best!

Defence industries survive on profits a war generates!

Hurriedly spreads media rumours-gossips to build case!

Politicians helplessly rally around momentum for election ease!

End up authorizing, supporting, ‘Unjust Illegal War aggressive!

A true patriot can never send another beyond border!

While hiding in the White House or Parliament or Palace shelter!

Knowing well war means killings among brothers and sisters!

Join soldiers proudly to defend country from attackers!

Violence starts from slaughterhouse!

Moves into a shopping bag!

Comes to the dinner table

Served as delicious meal -

Delighting our face, watering our mouth!

With no sight of killing,

Cry for help, pain and suffering -

Glides into stomach for assimilation

Rests in small intestine for absorption!

Moves to every cell

Finds nest in the brain!

Gradually hardens sensitive mind

Teaches acceptance of abuse, violent crime!

Violence grows with larger appetite

Covered in fashion by peer pressures!

Eliminates childhood ideals and curiosity

Embraces alcohol, tobacco and pornography!

Justifies recreation for civilized being

Including boxing, hunting, racism or drive by shooting!

Violence accompany us leaving school

Crowds’ corporate boardrooms!

Applies management science for profits

Downgrading employee salary, security, benefits!

Seeded in teachers, lawyers, storeowners!

Scientists, politicians, labourers or brokers!

Judges, doctors, lawmakers, or law keepers

Displays horrors as convenient measures!

Baptized with Scripture’s blessings

Becomes part of a ‘Commander in chief’!

Inherits most destructive power

To fight a war or make a war!

Briefed in secrecy while golfing

Making decision while hunting

Addressing nation at prime time viewing -

Starts a war, justify troops sending!

Submerged in wine and jovial mood

Relaxed with friends inside cozy war room

Precisely delivers missiles, shells, nuclear bombs!

Destroys countries, beings of all forms –

Unaware, unprepared, unarmed, unknown!

Life was full of wonder in 1950s El Paso

By Joe Olvera © 2007

Ok, so let me tell you a little bit about 1950s El Paso, when life was easier, perhaps, and the avenues of injustice didn’t penetrate our adobe living room walls. But, as a young man, say in 1954, I was ten years old and ready to trek Downtown to view a favorite picture show of mine called White Christmas.

Yes, we lived in a tenement apartment in the barrio of Rivera and Estrella, but we also enjoyed seeing other lifestyles, especially those where Anglos were concerned. We admired Anglos. We thought they all were rich. We wanted to emulate them. But, that was hard to do, you know?

Anyway, I would arise inside our two-room home (not two-bedrooms, two rooms), which I shared with mom, dad, three sisters and four brothers. I was, of course, the second to the youngest, with my brother Simon the baby of the family. My other siblings were Elvira, Carlos, Dario Jr. Nasario (we called him Challo), Cruz (we called her Cuy) and, of course, Petra (we called her Peter).

My first call was to attend to the natural elements, so I would walk outside to a cold breeze shivering in my heavy coat. A roll of toilet paper was held under wraps so that nosy neighbors wouldn’t know where I was going. Of course, they all knew, but I tried to hide it as much as possible.

Once inside my house again, breakfast would be ready. Oh, let’s say that today my mother had made huevos con chorizo, frijoles refritos and a batch of freshly made flour tortillas. Ummm, ummm, such delicious fare to start out my day, with, of course, a cup of hot chocolate to warm my chilled bones.

So, my repast completed, I would do my toilet – you know, wash my face, brush my teeth, comb my flat-top, what there was to comb, that is. My toilet was accomplished over a sink equipped only with a cold-water faucet. By then I had already read the newspaper, the El Paso Times.

My large family created a constant hive of activity. This was Saturday, but  no rest for the weary, because we got up early to begin the day. Each of us with plans that meant meeting the world on our own terms, and loving every minute of it. Because, you see, life was so exciting. To be ten years old and viewing life inside darkened theaters.

So, there I would go, walking about four blocks on Estrella Street, past Pera, to Alameda Avenue, where I would climb the blue Lower Valley bus for my ride Downtown. I would sit awhile, but, more than likely, I would get up to offer my seat to a little old lady or a little old man, or even some young, beautiful girl. My mom and dad had taught me to always be a gentleman, and so I tried to comply.

The bus traveled down Alameda, then veered onto Texas Avenue and continued to the Plaza de los Lagartos, where everybody got off. I would walk in that cool weather to the Plaza Theater, my canned goods in hand. Every Christmas, the Plaza would sponsor a day of movie and cartoon viewing. Admission cost a can of food to be donated to the less fortunate. It’s hard to believe, but there were others less fortunate than me.

So I walked on San Antonio Street, then up Stanton and past the E-Z Shoe Shine Parlor, where I would one day work as a shoeshine boy for Frankie Marlboro. Then I would go left at Mills and to the Plazita de los Lagartos (stopping to gaze at the lazy alligators that graced the center of the Plaza).

So, anyway, the Plaza Theater beckoned. My can of food safely stored in a cardboard box, I would enter this wondrous edifice, with its high ceilings and stars that twinkled merrily. Of course, it was scary too, because rumors were that ghosts haunted the men’s room downstairs. Without much ado, I would take care of my business – imagining untold horrors – then rush back to the safety of my seat and a packed house.

After the movie ended, I would either catch the bus home or wander into the Kress Department Store, where toy cars were a dime apiece and comic books a nickel. Archie, Superman and Little Lulu were some favorites. I could also go farther south, walking to the Colon Theater to see which of my favorite Mexican comedians was playing. Would it be Cantinflas? How about Resortes, or even Tin-Tan, or Clavillazo? Maybe Pedro Infante would be singing his way to paradise, or Maria Felix, with her dark, mysterious eyes. After viewing White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, it was good to get a jolt of Mexican artistry.

I could even walk to Juarez, to stroll on Juarez Avenue – mariachis serenading, the mystical beat pounding deep into my subconscious. Juarez, Down-town El Paso, what difference was there? The electric trolleys traveled both ways, so that if you were tired of walking, you simply boarded and relaxed to your destination.

El Paso in the 1950s. People strolling, mothers pushing baby carriages, fathers toting tots on husky shoulders. Radio stations blaring loudly, television sets – relatively new contraptions – barely viewable, with only two stations, plus the one station from Juarez, in Spanish – yet, entertaining pieces of machinery. Yes, I miss those days. But, you know what? I’m glad I’m living now, today. I’ve seen much, but there’s so much more to see, so much more yet to come. Asi es que, stay tuned, you know?

Memories of a more peaceful, beautiful Beirut

by Joe Olvera © 1982

Oh, what beauty and tranquility I spotted on that peaceful day as our Middle East Airlines flight prepared for landing at Beirut International Airport. The year was 1970, and the beauty of a now war-torn land beckoned and beamed a bright welcome to international travelers. Beirut is a city caught in a deadly tug-of-war. But, it wasn’t always so.

When last I saw Beirut, the verdant hills pulsated life, while the Mediterranean Sea pushed hard against sandy-white beaches. The climate was hot and muggy, but it was a natural heat. One that grabbed you by the arms and lifted  you with its exotic air. You didn’t mind that kind of heat.

That kind of heat was not caused by man-made weapons of destruction. There were no bullets or short-armed bandits bouncing bombs and mayhem upon the countryside. As our plane touched down, I said goodbye to a Lebanese gentleman; he had invited me to his farm somewhere in the suburbs of Beirut.

I was on my way to Saudi Arabia to work under a contract with an American firm based in Marietta, Georgia. Subsequently, I was to be assigned to Al Karjh, about 50 long and dusty miles from the capital city, Riyadh. The stopover in Beirut was to be an overnighter, and I gladly anticipated the adventure. Middle East Airlines was picking up the tab for our stay. We stayed at the beautiful (wonder if it’s still standing) Phoenicia Hotel. Its marble opulence lent an air of sophistication to my youthful enthusiasm; I was 26 at the time and ready for romance and adventure.

Certainly, Beirut provided both as the city spread out its welcome. A friendly representative of Middle East Airlines met us at the airport and helped us speed through customs. Soon, we were on our way to the hotel, where the loud and exciting street sounds greeted our entrance into the city.

I remember standing on the balcony of my hotel room, a drink in my hand, and gazing at the local populace as people rushed madly through their myriad activities. There was a hurried environment, and I soaked up all the images, sounds, sights and smells that my brain could manage. I remember having dinner at the hotel’s main dining room, on the top floor, where I could look down into the darkness of the Mediterranean. Small fires dotted the white beaches, which glowed mysteriously, even in the dark.

I dined on shrimp cocktail, chateaubriand and good old American-styled French Fries. I remember smoking a cigar in anticipation of the night on the town yet to come. There were four of us from El Paso that had opted for overseas employment. As we made plans for the evening, I excused myself, promising to meet my friends later that night. I browsed around the hotel, sat and enjoyed Spanish music being played and sung by a musician with a guitar. The crowd of people staying at the hotel were, by all evidences, wealthy people. They also represented a variety of nationalities

I remember leaving the hotel and walking the streets of Beirut, hungry for experience. I remember “hawkers” standing outside nightclub doors and practically pulling in people. It was so much like being in Juarez, I thought at the time. I remember walking into a club located in an alley. I don’t remember the name of the bar, but it was owned by a Spanish lady. As I walked in, two of my El Paso friends were there.

One of them was a rather mellow fellow, who had known the club owner for a long time. The lady was obviously infatuated with my friend, but my friend was indifferent to her charms. He had only recently married and was determined to be true to his new wife. I remember the club owner telling us that our money was no good in her place, and I remember finally walking back to the Phoenicia Hotel at 5 a.m., staggering slightly from my all night bout.

I had every intention of visiting the farmer whom I had befriended on the plane the very next day. However, the fumes of fate clouded my mind, and I did not awaken until 4 p.m. It was time to fly to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I remember Beirut with fondness. I remember Beirut before hundreds of Palestinian refugees were slaughtered by Israeli-supported Lebanese Christians. Yes, I remember Beirut before the deluge.

And so it goes.

Los Rinches de Tejas were murdering brutes

By Joe Olvera ©

They just don’t get it, do they? Now comes another politician – an Anglo woman this time – to remind us Mexicans/Chicanos that the killer Texas Rangers are still alive and well. Known by Mexicans as Los Rinches de Tejas – these foul-mouthed lawmen too often took the law into their own hands and lynched Mexicans simply because they were there and because they were defenseless.

Some estimates are that thousands of Mexicans were lynched by Los Rinches who, in their brutality, executed them without suffering any repercussions. Los Rinches would falsely arrest Mexicans and would promptly lynch them, without benefit of a court trial or any other venue where the person’s guilt or innocence could be proved. In the period from 1848 to 1870, some official records show that 473 out of every 100,000 Mexican migrant workers died at the hands of Los Rinches.

And, get this, State Comptroller turned Gubernatorial candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn wants to bring them back. Yes, folks, back by popular demand – Los Rinches de Tejas are making their comeback in Mexican barrios. You see, Strayhorn wants to bring them to the borderlands to place them in charge of state homeland security. That’s almost as ludicrous as Kinky Friedman – another Governor candidate – who wants to station 10,000 troops along our border with Mexico.

What’s wrong with these two people? Hello! Aren’t they aware that they want to govern a state that once belonged to Mexico? By that same token, there are millions of Mexicans/Chicanos who still live here. We never went anyplace, never abandoned what was once ours. Yet, these two candidates are approaching the campaign as if there were no Mexicans/Chicanos in the state. They seem to be speaking to the Anglo populace, because they sure are not speaking to me. Am I supposed to be thrilled that Strayhorn wants to bring Los Rinches back? Am I supposed to be thrilled that Kinky has even more outlandish ways of dealing with the immigration issue? I don’t think so.

Let me quote an article that appeared in a website known as The Handbook of Texas Online about the way Los Rinches dealt with Mexicans: “Issues of immediate concern to Mexican Americans after the Texas Revolution centered around racist actions. In the 1850s, Tejanos faced expulsion from their Central Texas homes on the accusation that they helped slaves escape to Mexico. Others became victims of Anglo wrath around the Goliad area during the Cart War of 1857, as they did in South Texas in 1859 after Juan N. Cortinas’s capture of Brownsville. Following the Civil War, both the newly freed slaves and Tejanos faced further atrocities. In the 1880s, white men in East Texas used violence as a method of political control and lynching became the common form of retaliation for alleged rapes of white women or for other insults or injuries perpetrated upon white society. Mexican Americans of South Texas experienced similar forms of brutality. The Ku Klux Klan, the White Caps, law officials, and the Texas Rangers, all acting as agents of white authority, regularly terrorized both Mexican Americans and black Texans.”

And, get this – Carole Strayhorn wants to bring them back. That’s sure to cause great cheer and celebration among Mexicans and Chicanos because, after all, we’re supposed to forget everything that happened in those days. Because, wouldn’t you know it, things are much better now. Los Rinches de Tejas are no longer the brutal forces they once were, don’t you know? Yeah, right.

Okay, I’ll give her the benefit of a doubt. There probably are some Mexicans and Chicanos in Texas who would welcome Los Rinches de Tejas. But, the vast majority has not forgotten about the atrocities they committed against Mexicans. Los Rinches really didn’t care whether a person was in Texas legally or not. It was carte blanche and Mexicans were fair game. After all, they weren’t Anglos, were they?
